So, what kind of person gravitates to a Rolex Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II. Through its history it has been mainly airline pilots, globe trotting travelers and international professionals .
The Rolex GMT-Master II features Oyster 40 mm case made with yellow gold. Rolex GMT-Master was introduced in 1955 to satisfy the needs of international pilots at the time and more recently the GMT-Master II was released in 2005 for professionals who are international travelers crossing time-zones frequently on their business trips. The GMT-Master II features rotatable 24-hour graduated bezel and a separate 24-hour hand which allows business travelers to read three different time zones. Two at a time.
The Rolex GMT-Master II was designed to combine functionality with rugged good looks. It’s ability to display different time zones is flawless. The functional and versatile appearance makes the GMT-Master suitable for many occasion from travel, formal events and business meetings and the GMT-Master II exudes an even more presence of status and opulence with its yellow gold case and hunter green face.
Besides the conventional hour, minute and seconds hands, the Rolex GMT-Master II is designed with an arrow-tipped hand, which circles the dial once every 24 hours, as well as a bidirectional rotatable 24-hour graduated bezel. The coloured 24-hour hand displays the “home” reference time in a first time zone which can be read on the graduations on the bezel. Local time is set by “jumping” from hour to hour, thanks to a well designed mechanism operated via the winding crown: the hour hand can be adjusted forwards or backwards independently of the minute and seconds hands. This allows travelers to adapt to their new time zone without affecting the precision of their timekeeping.
During the 1950s with the coming of the jet age, more airplanes and passengers were traversing many time zones and there became more of a need to keep time around the world in airports, local time at destinations and GMT reference time. The GMT-Master was created to full-fill the requirements of travelers at the zenith of the age of air travel and quickly became the official watch of several intercontinental airlines like Pan American World Airways or Pan Am.
Features
- In a mechanical watch, the oscillator is the conventional oscillator hairsprings and they are usually made
of ferromagnetic alloys, making the spring vulnerable to magnetic fields, temperature variations and shocks that interfere with their precision. After years of research, Rolex created the blue Parachrom hairspring, which is finer than a human hair. - Crafted from a highly stable paramagnetic alloy that includes niobium and zirconium, it is insensitive
to magnetic fields and up to 10 times more resistant to shocks. Historically, the unique blue colour of
the hairspring has been a sign of prestige reserved for only the most accurate timepieces.
