Mercedes-Benz has 5 SUVs in their model line up, the newest is the Mercedes-Benz GLK a compact SUV as it is classified. Although by looking at the Mercedes GLK you couldn’t tell if it was a compact.

The compact SUV market is where it’s at these days, as most people who do not want large trucks are looking for something smaller to fit their needs and the Mercedes-Benz GLK and other their competitors appeal to this market segment of buyer.

The lines of the compact GLK 350 is angular and has a hint of the real jeep off-roader look that North American consumers are used to and it is more upright and square than the Mercedes M-Class or the big GL-Class big brother.

The rugged exterior is contrast by a luxurious interior that is on par with the M and GL class SUVs, Mercedes-Benz did not cut corners on the interior trim and materials.

The GLK 350 has a 4Matic 3.5 Liter DOHC V6 which is found in many other Mercedes-Benz models. This engine is the GLK 350 puts out 268 hp and 258 lb/ft of torque with the 7 speed automatic transmission/ sequential transmission.

The Mercedes-Benz GLK 350 starts at $34, 600, you can add 20 inch alloy rims and aluminum roof racks which comes with the Sport Package for $800 or aluminum running boards for $700. However, if you want to go all out go for the “sterling silver” 20 inch rims at a whopping price of $3,400.

For interior you can get charcoal with aluminum accents or sandy beige with low gloss wood trim which looks really good. The driver and passenger seats features Neck-Pro crash-responsive head rest which moves forward to cushion the head in the event of a frontal crash. Then there is power everything as you would expect for a luxury compact SUV and cruise control as well as dual-zone climate control , all the above is standard.

Some of the safety features include the “dynamic handling control system” which is anti-lock braking and Mercedes traction control called 4ETS. The 4ETS system works with Electronic Stability Control system (ESP) and electronic brake assist. All these system keep you in control of the car and things get a little loose.

Speed sensitive steering tightens up and standard Agility Control (auto adjust shock absorber firmness to road conditions) kicks in when you drive at higher highway speeds, this combination of auto adjustments in the dynamics of the vehicle makes the Mercedes-Benz GLK 350 feel and ride more the bigger Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan.

The 4Matic all-wheel drive system does a tremendous job at managing wheel slippage and it is a standard feature, which engages very fast to obtain grip and so drivers of the GLK do not have to worry and drive with confidence in bad weather conditions.

The GLK 350 weighs in at 4036 lbs or 1830 kg but can go from 0-100 km/h in 6.7 seconds
or 0-62.13 mph in 6.7 seconds at a top speed of 210 km/h or 130.4 mph. The fuel consumption for the GLK 350 is rated at 13.3L/100 km in the city and 9.6L/100 km (21 mpg) on the highway.

So if you are in the market for a luxury SUV, but don’t want something too large and something that sucks up too much gasoline, take a look at the compact Mercedes-Benz GLK 350.
